I am admin but can’t perform administrative tasks

While I was working on a project, I noticed a strange behavior.

I was an admin user as my user was added in administrator group. However, I was unable to access other users’ folders nor perform such commands “net user test test /add”. I was all the time getting the “Access denied” error.

That’s a weird behavior. Having an admin user but can’t perform administrative functions. I knew that it was related to UAC but it was disabled. Was it really ?

UAC disabled

No, It wasn’t disabled at all. By the way, I am trying to accomplish this task only from the terminal so I don’t have gui (rdesktop) access to the laptop. However, I do have full control of the machine. If you have gui access, you can just simply run cmd as administrator and done.

But if you are trying to manage things via cmd terminal. you need to disabled the UAC configuration below:

  • Open “secpol.msc” 
  • Select Local Policies > Security Options.
  • Scroll down to UAC (User Account Control) settings.
  • There you will find: User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode

Make sure to disabled this settings if you are trying to perform certain things. I don’t recommend doing that but sometimes it blocks us 🙂

Make also sure to restart the machine after making it Disabled.
